when you went to bed last night unless you went to bed late. and you will notice rain showers across the region. there is your front south and east of washington pushing across the bay out towards easton and the important feature is that the rain is generally right behind the front. temperatures have fallen into the 40s. it feels rather cool and raw out there this morning. we'll be dealing with the rain showers for the next several hours. it is light rain for the most part across the region. we have light rain anorthwest washington across much of the beltway here and out to the west is where the most moderate rain bands are. -- we have light rain in northwest washington. temperatures a good 25 degrees cooler than yesterday this

afternoon. more details coming up in a minute. back to you. our top story, former d.c. council chair kwame brown will be sentenced later on today. he resigned from the council and needed guilty to bank fraud charges back in june. if federal prosecutors get their way, brown could face six days in jail and three years of supervised release. a group of d.c. schools targeted for closure or consolidation is set to be released yesterday. those schools targeted for consolidation will most like be combined with higher-performing charter schools. lawmakers are returning to capitol hill today after the election season break and they have a full plate of unfinished business to get done. the biggest challenge is avoiding the double hit to the economy of tax increases and automatic spending cuts nope as the fiscal cliff. another issue congress

have gotten threatening edmonton mails from paula broadwell. >> what of -- i've been told is that there was somebody else that he knew and was close to and that mrs. broadwell sent these threatening e-mails to her and she was frightened and she went to the f.b.i. >> the fbi raided broadwell's home in north carolina last night. no word on any evidence they collected so far. new this morning, former d.c. council chair kwame brown will learn his fate today. he pled guilty to bank fraud charges back in june. melanie alnwick is live with the latest on thto give us an update. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. kwame brown's original plea agreement where he admitted guilt to all of those charges called for a six-month jail

term. prosecutors have oftenned somewhat and sid they are asking that he spend -- have softened somewhat and said they are asking that he send just six days in jail. he pled guilty in june to putting some false information on bank loan applications. one of the loans was for a 39 high pressure foot, 330- horsepower boat. brown also forged the signature of a friend on an application and doctored two forms to save his income by tens of thousands of dollars. an audit found that brown's 2008 election campaign failed to report more than $400,000 in contributions and expenditures and that $239,000 wound up in the hands of a consulting company controlled by brown's brother. prosecutors said brown deserved credit since he did resign his position on the council, pleaded guilty and didn't

default on any of those loans. they put out a sentencing memo a couple of weeks ago t said quote, the defendant has paid a high price for his crime as he should. he was once one of the most powerful elected officials in the district of columbia with strong popular support from the community and a bright political future. after sentencing, he will be a convicted felon and with no political office and he will be unemployed. brown's attorney is asking for for jail time and two years community service. he actually has two sentencing hearings. first one at 11:00 in federal court and another one this afternoon at 2:30 for the campaign finance violation and that is in d.c.'s superior court. back to you. >> thank you. opening statements are expected to begin today in the murder trial of a bowie state university student charged with killing a roommate with a pair

of scissors. alexis simpson is charged with first degree murder. police say she attacked her roommate last year after the two argued over music played on an ipod. if convicted, simpson face as a maximum of life in prison without parole. a student on the montgomery college campus in rockville is arrested for threatening to go on a shooting spree. school officials say he had recently gone through a tough break-up and made the comments on other students. they found the student eating lunch outside campus yesterday but did not find a weapon. a list of d.c. schools targeted for closure or consolidation is expected to be released today. it is expect to focus on under populated schools. in 2008, d.c. closed 23 schools, a move that ended up costing the city millions of do

now to a fox 5 follow-up investigation on a critical shortage of paramedics in the district. the city can't keep enough medic units on the streets around the clock so now, as fox 5 first reported, d.c.'s fire chief will announce a plan to move paramedics off overnight hours to cover busier times of the day. fox 5 talked with chief kenny etheler bee. he disputes the claims by the firefighters' union that this will reduce their ability to respond to calls by 36%. >> this gives us an opportunity to look at a decades-old system and respond more readily to our community. we've looked at the data for over a year and the data indicates that we don't have as many calls from 1:00 to 7:00 a.m. as we do from 7:00 touring the day. we are trying to adjust our schedule, adjust our service delivery model to make sure we can meet the demand of the community. >> reporter: the chief says the

cliff. less than a week after david petraeus resigned, president obama already has a replacement in mind. the "washington post" cites sources that said it could go to john brennan if he wants. it the post also reports that the president is considering john kerry to serve as the next defense secretary. kerry is said to covet the position of secretary of state but many insiders believe that post will go to current u.s. ambassador to the united nations susan rice. new satellite images show north korea could be testing rocket engines and may be a sign that the communist regime continues developing long-range ballistic missiles. the analysis is from the u.s. korean institute at johns hopkins school of advance the international studies. attempts to have a freeze of the program collapsed when north korea launched a missile in april. what about bomb-sniffing mice? one security company says the

welcome back. it is tuesday and it is a wet tuesday and a cold one too. this is a live look right now over washington and some areas kind of thick and i don't know if it is foggy but either way,

there is just a lot of moisture in the air right now and leaves on the ground. you know what that will mean. >> good point. when i was driving in the residential neighborhood was covered in leaves. the new music sound so mellow now. >> we gently wake people up on fox 5. >> whole different game. we've got the showers moving in from the west. parts of the area haven't seen much yet but most of us will get at lost a little something over the next few hours. the actual front, the actual cold front bringing in the cooler air is just to our south and east here of washington pushing across the bay. and our viewers here in southern maryland down to calvert county, if you are down towards california, maryland, st. mary's city, haven't seen a whole lot of shower activity but you will. not a whole lot of heavy rain although we have a little bit embedded back here west of dulles. all of this pushing to the east

here and associated with this cool front, this cold front that will bring temperatures down a good 20 to 25 degrees. there is your cold front. you can see that the band of run showers not terribly wide. we should be done with the run by 7:00, 8:00 9:00 this morning. and later today, the cloud cover will push to the south. 4 in washington. 51 in annapolis. 46 in leonardtown. temperatures still falling off to the north and west. we are now 39-degree in winchester and in cumberland. our temperature later today just aren't going to rebound a lot. i think we'll spend most of the day in the upper 40s with pretty good winds occasionally. 26 in quantico so it is breezy

south of 109. you will fine yourself at speed. lanes are coming across from clarkburg. we do have wet pavement to accompany the drive inbond towards the beltway. 39 that, traffic flowing freely out to the 14th street bridge. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. traffic. >> thank you. after five years of construction, the wait is almost over. a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held today to mark the opening of the 495 express lane but the lanes will not open to the public until saturday. virginia governor bob mcdonnell will be at today's event. it will give drives new options from when traveling from the springfield inare change to just north of the dulles toll road. road. -- interchange to just north of the dulles toll road. we are monitoring metro's complaints of bus and rail passengers telling of commutes much too long and too few trains on a day set aside as a veterans day holiday for some washingtonians. metro ran the schedule on a

saturday schedule yesterday but that was just one of the problems. local and federal government worker got the day off as a holiday. >> >> reporter: some bus passengers had tweeted complaint that they waited up to two hours to get a ride to work in the morning. man resorted to taking taxis. -- many resorted to taking taxis. taxis. this rider saws his red line commute between rock shill and friendship heights was no pick nick. >> i got a ride there. on the way back home, it took about an hour because there is track work between friendship heights and grosvenor t took an hour. it usually takes 20 minutes. >> reporter: that dreaded track work. >> i got on the overloaded tran and we still had to wait. it took me an hour and a half to get to work this morning. >> reporter: it wasn't awful for everybody even though there was also track work on the orange and green lines. >> it seemed pretty normal.

i think my hypes weren't that affected. but you know they are doing traffic work on a bunch of the different line and i just lucked out. -- it seemed pretty normal. i think my lines weren't that affected. >> reporter: this is not your typical rush hour considering it is a holiday and there is all that track work going on but these are a lot of passengers. >> i mean it is monday. know it is a holiday but in d.c., a lot of people work on federal holidays. >> reporter: we asked metro for reaction to the crowding and confusion and got this statement. typically on federal holidays, we see 20 to 30% lower ridership. we republican strains on a skate schedule. the track work this time last year was even more extensive with larger sections of the track shut down. we try to do the best we k unfortunate had, there were some delays. >> it is what you expect from metro, poor service, bad
